Black Forest was once a hub of activity when the American pioneers first settled in the areas in the late 1850s. The area was the primary source of timber which was scarce at the time. In 1860, the first of several dozen sawmills were built.

In 2013, around Highway 83 and Shoup Road, a forest fire broke out. The fire burned around 15,500 acres, 511 buildings were completely destroyed and there were two fatalities.
